Memory card game

Kitchen Memory

Flip two cards, find the matching dishes and clear the board in as few moves as you can. Pick from three board sizes and try to beat your own best score.

Setting the table…

How to play

  1. Choose Easy, Medium or Hard. The cards are shuffled and dealt face down.
  2. Tap or click a card to flip it, then flip a second one. Every two cards you flip count as one move.
  3. If the two dishes match, the pair stays face up for the rest of the game.
  4. If they do not match, both cards stay visible for about 0.9 seconds and then flip back. You cannot flip anything else until they have turned over.
  5. Keep going until every dish is paired. Your time, moves and star rating appear at the end.

The clock starts with your first flip, not when the board appears, so you can take a moment to get settled. It stops whenever you press the pause button or switch to another tab. While the game is paused the cards are hidden, so a pause is a break and not a chance to study the board.

Controls

  • Touch or mouse: tap or click a card to flip it.
  • Keyboard: press Tab to reach the board, move between cards with the arrow keys (Home and End jump to the first and last card) and flip with Enter or Space. Escape pauses and resumes.
  • Buttons above the board: pause, restart with a fresh shuffle, change difficulty and sound on or off.

Difficulty levels

Each level adds more dishes to remember. The board is laid out taller on phones and wider on tablets and computers so the cards stay easy to tap.

LevelCardsPairsGrid on phonesGrid on wider screens
Easy1263 × 44 × 3
Medium20104 × 55 × 4
Hard30155 × 66 × 5

Grids are written as columns × rows. Easy always uses the same 6 dishes, and each harder level keeps those and adds more, up to 15 different dishes on Hard.

How stars and best scores work

Stars depend only on how many moves you needed compared with the number of pairs on the board. Time does not affect your stars.

  • 3 stars: you finish in no more than 2 moves per pair.
  • 2 stars: you finish in no more than 3 moves per pair.
  • 1 star: you finish the board in any number of moves.

Best scores

The game keeps one best score for each difficulty. A result beats your best if it used fewer moves; if the moves are equal, the faster time wins. When that happens the win screen shows "New best!". The start screen lists your best for every level along with the number of games you have won.

Where scores are kept: best scores and your games-won count are saved in this browser on this device. Use "Reset best scores" on the start screen to clear them; the game asks you to confirm first.

Memory tips that work in this game

  1. Scan in a fixed order. Early on, flip unknown cards row by row from the top left instead of jumping around. When every card you have seen has a predictable place in your sweep, there is less to remember.
  2. Name each card out loud. Saying "fries, top right" or "cupcake, second row" gives you a word and a place to recall, not just a picture.
  3. Pair cards by position. Corners and edges are easy landmarks. Remember middle cards by their neighbor: "the donut is just below the corner burger."
  4. Start each move with a card you have not seen. If it turns out to match a card you remember, you take the pair right away. If you start with the known card instead, you need luck on the second flip.
  5. Use the mismatch pause. A wrong pair stays visible for about 0.9 seconds. Look at both cards, not just the one you flipped last, before they turn over.
  6. Slow down and count moves, not seconds. Stars and best scores are decided by moves, and time only breaks ties. On Hard, with 30 cards, it helps to treat the board as two halves and clear the pairs you are sure of before exploring further.
